Warm weather and sunny days are wonderful, but summer temperatures can climb sky-high until it feels like you’re melting faster than an ice cream cone! While cooling down with a cup or cone in hand is always our favorite summer activity, there are so many great ways to keep cool and support your community at the same time. Here are four ways to keep cool this summer!
Visit the Public Library
Air conditioning, anyone? Visit the closest branch of the public library for a blast of cold air and a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Check out a new novel and take a look at the schedule while you’re at it– spring and summer are the busiest times at the library! All kinds of programming is available for kids, teens, and adults alike. From crafts to support groups to trivia matches on Harry Potter’s birthday, the library has events for everyone– not to mention rooms full of fascinating reads.
Peruse the Shops on Main Street
While we may have relocated from our home in Downtown Sykesville, Main Street remains as wonderful as ever! Support small businesses and do your shopping locally. Don’t have a gift for Mom or Dad yet? Buy the perfect Mother’s or Father’s Day present to show how much you love them. With neat finds and unique merchandise you won’t find at Target or the Super Walmart, the Main Street shops and restaurants are a lovely place to spend any summer afternoon.
Go For a Hike
For shady trails and waterside walks, visit a hiking trail near you and get back into nature. Try Morgan Run Natural Environment Area off of New Washington Road (MD-97) for trails fit for the whole family. Walk next to the wide, rock-lined stream and enjoy the fresh air. For another option, visit Liberty Reservoir and watch billions of gallons of water gush down from the top of Liberty Dam. Just remember not to swim in it!
Hold a Backyard Campout
Always popular with little ones, set up a tent in your backyard for a staycation you won’t forget. Unplug for a night or two and sleep in the breeze, where nothing lies between you and the stars but a thin canvas roof. Catch fireflies in jars or build a fire and make s’mores– whatever your heart desires! Temperatures drop at night, so make sure to bring an extra blanket. The morning sun will feel good for a change!
